The Village currently has 7.3 miles of major streets and 17.3 miles of local streets within its boundaries. The DPS provides storm sewer maintenance for underground lines, manholes, and catch basins, with ditching and dry well installation performed in areas where storm sewers are not available. There are 13.6 miles (71,050 feet) of storm sewer lines in the Village of Milford.
Traffic control activity includes maintainance of signage, street line marking, and guardrail maintenance and installation. Traffic signals are installed and serviced by the Road Commission for Oakland County.
The Village must always be prepared for the winter months. The DPS budgets approximately 1,200 hours of labor and equipment for plowing, salting, and hauling of snow from the major streets each year. The community is divided up into routes, with 10 pieces of snow removal equipment assigned to these routes. We purchase the road salt through a contract with the State of Michigan, who lets bids for the Michigan Department of Transportation each year; the DPS typically uses about 1,000 tons of salt annually.
Street maintenance involves sweeping, patching, pavement replacement, crack sealing, shoulder grading, gravel road grading and dust control, litter clean-up, grass mowing, and weed cutting.
Revenue is received from the State of Michigan for the maintenance of major and local streets, based on a formula of population, a state factor, and miles of roads. In order to receive this revenue, the Village is required to establish both a Major Street Fund and a Local Street Fund. In addition to money received from the State, the Village contributes approximately $250,000 each year from its general fund to maintain major and local streets. | |
