SENIOR & DISABLED TRANSPORTATION 2010-11

SENIOR CITIZENS/RIDE WITH PRIDE TRANSPORTATION
The Townships of Milford and Highland cooperate with the Village in providing transportation to senior citizens and permanently disabled adults within our shared jurisdictions. Two vans were donated to the program by the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) in 2005. SMART replaces vans after five years and 100,000 miles; two of the vans are close to meeting these requirements and new vans have been requested.
The major source of revenue for the program is derived from grants from SMART and Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). Riders pay fares ranging from $2.00 per one-way trip within an 8-mile radius of the Village to $6 for medical appointments outside the 8-mile radius up to 16 miles.  In addition to these sources of revenue,  both Townships and the Village provide financial assistance.
The Highland Township Senior Center Director writes the MDOT grant, meets reporting requirements, supervises the seven part-time drivers and the program coordinator, and takes care of scheduling. The Village of Milford provides budgeting, accounting, and payroll services and the Village's Department of Public Services performs maintenance on the vans. In 2009, the program made 10,060 one-way trips totaling 74,445 miles; a 6.4% decrease in trips and an 8% decrease in miles over the prior year. This decrease is due to the change in the hours the vans operate. In August 2009, the hours were cut back to cut operating costs.
